Award-winning journalist and photographer Pete Lyons presents 24 pages of some of the most interesting racing rivalries ever to take place. This beautiful large-format and high-quality calendar is sure to please any racing or car fan.

Remember what happened fifty years ago? The 1969 Canadian-American Challenge Cup series almost doubled, to eleven rounds from six. That should give opponents more chances to beat McLaren’s “Bruce and Denny Show,” right? Wrong.
The papaya-colored cars dominated all eleven racedays of the Can-Am’s longest season. McLaren himself earned his second driver’s championship, beating teammate Denny “The Bear” Hulme. For the Kiwis from tiny, far off New Zealand, 1969 truly was The Perfect Season. But what fun it was to watch the others challenge Perfection. Rival drivers included Amon, Andretti, Donohue, Gurney, Parsons, Rodriguez and Siffert. Carmakers Chaparral, Ferrari, Lola, and even Porsche came with new designs, and strong teams like Gurney, Holman-Moody, Motschenbacher, and once even Penske fielded solidly upgraded older cars. We also saw interesting machines from Bryant and McKee. The old “no rules” Can-Am was all about wild, new, knock-your-socks-off racecars and the series gave us plenty of ‘em! Pete Lyons was there with camera and notebook, and his 2019 Velocity Calendar brings that epic 1969 season to life again for its Golden Anniversary. Here are thirty-seven of his own period photographs, many never before seen, together with his own descriptions of the action he shows on all twelve monthly spreads. King Kong-sized like the old Can-Am itself, this is a premier celebration of an age of racing freedom long gone. But never forgotten.
